EDUCATION
Dr Yiolanda Christou is a Neurologist. Dr Christou received her Medical Doctorate (MD) from the Medical school of the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis in 1999. She then went on to do her specialty in Neurology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aiginitio Hospital Neurology Clinic in 2009.
SPECIALIZATION
Dr Christou specializes in Neurodegenerative Diseases including Parkinson Disease, Parkinsonism, Movement Disorders and Dementia. She has an MSc in Translational Medicine from the University of Edinburgh, College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Her Thesis was on Mitochondrial associated SNPs in Cypriot Parkinson’s disease patients: phenotypic – genotypic correlationwith special interest in the investigation of Dementia and other rare neurodegenerative diseases.
EXPERIENCE
Dr Christou has a long standing collaboration with the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. From 2009 to 2020 Dr. Christou served as a Consultant Neurologist at The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Dementia Centre, Movement Disorders Centre and Epilepsy Centre. In 2015 Dr Christou became a Faculty Associate at the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, a position which she held until 2020 and in 2021 went on to be a Lecturer at the same School. In 2020 she was also appointed Senior Neurologist, Head of the Department of Neurobiology at The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, a position she held until 2021. From 2017 to 2021 Dr. Christou served as a Special Scientist at the University of Cyprus Medical School. In 2021 she became a Clinical Associate at the University of Nicosia Medical School and in 2022 a Consultant Neurologist at the Acropoleos Medical Center, two positions she still holds today.
