EDUCATION
Dr Michael S. Papageorgiou was born in Athens in 1977. He obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, in 2002. Following his graduation, he pursued his residency in General and Endocrine Surgery at the First University Surgical Department of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, which he completed in 2008.
In 2009, he was awarded a PhD in Thyroid Cancer from Democritus University of Thrace, graduating with distinction (Excellent). Throughout his career, he has actively participated in numerous local and international conferences and workshops, frequently serving as a guest speaker.
In 2016, he received accreditation in Minimal Invasive and Robotic Endocrine Surgery from IRCAD Strasbourg, France, further enhancing his expertise in advanced surgical techniques.
SPECIALIZATION
Dr Papageorgiou is a General Surgeon with specialised training and a particular focus on Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, including thyroid cancer treatment, lymph node neck dissection, and parathyroidectomy.
In addition to his expertise in endocrine surgery, he performs a wide range of General Surgery procedures, including laparoscopic and open abdominal surgeries, hernia repairs, and minor surgical interventions. His extensive knowledge in both traditional and minimally invasive surgical techniques ensures comprehensive patient care.
EXPERIENCE
Dr Papageorgiou began his surgical training in 2002, undertaking his residency in General and Endocrine Surgery at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Greece, which he completed in 2008.
In 2009, he moved to Cyprus, where he was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Larnaca General Hospital, a role he held until 2014. He then transitioned to Nicosia General Hospital, where he served as a Consultant Surgeon in 2014–2015, actively contributing to the Thyroid Clinic and further developing his expertise in endocrine surgery.
From 2015 to 2025, he worked as a Consultant Surgeon at the American Medical Center in Nicosia, providing high-quality surgical care and specialising in endocrine and general surgical procedures. In 2025, he joined Platonas Medical Center in Nicosia, where he continues his clinical practice as a Consultant Surgeon.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Papageorgiou has been actively involved in medical education and research. From 2013 to 2021, he served as a Scientific Collaborator at the European University in Nicosia, contributing to the training of future medical professionals.
He is a member of several prestigious medical associations, including the Cyprus Medical Association (CMA), the International Surgical Society (ISS), the International Association of Endocrine Surgery (IAES), the European Society of Endocrine Surgery (ESES), and the European Thyroid Association (ETA).
Throughout his career, he has published numerous research papers in internationally accredited medical journals, contributing to advancements in thyroid and endocrine surgery.
