EDUCATION

Dr Constantinos Pouyiouros was born in Agios Sergios, Famagusta, and following the 1974 Turkish invasion, he and his family were displaced to Paphos. He completed his secondary education at Paphos Gymnasium (equivalent to a British Grammar School) and graduated in 1978 with a distinction, earning a final grade of 19 8/14 (out of 20) and receiving several academic awards.

In 1980, he was admitted to the School of Medicine at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, securing a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY), which was renewed annually throughout his six years of study. He graduated in 1986 with a Diploma grade of 8.2/10.

During his studies, he completed a two-month surgical course at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (USA), gaining valuable early clinical exposure.

From 1987 to 1991, he pursued a specialisation in Neurology at the First Neurology Department of AHEPA University Hospital in Thessaloniki. Following this, he worked as a Research Associate at the same department from 1991 to 1994, under the guidance of Professor Stavros Baloyannis.

In 1994, he successfully passed the United States Medical Licensure Examinations (ECFMG), demonstrating his competence in international medical standards.

SPECIALIZATION

Dr Pouyiouros has extensive expertise in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology, with particular experience in Neuromuscular Disorders and Electromyography (EMG).

 

He completed a Postgraduate Fellowship in Neuromuscular Diseases at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, USA, between 1995 and 1996. He further refined his skills in advanced neurophysiological techniques through specialised training at Uppsala University in Sweden in 1997.

 

His research experience includes work in nervous tissue cultures, muscle biopsies, Golgi staining of neurons and neuroglia, and experimental modelling of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

EXPERIENCE

Dr Pouyiouros has been practising Neurology in Nicosia, Cyprus, since 1997, with a primary focus on Clinical Neurophysiology. For over 27 years, he has performed daily neurophysiological studies, including nerve conduction studies, needle EMG, evoked potentials, and electroencephalograms (EEG).

 

From 1997 to 2024, he worked as a Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist at Apollonion Private Hospital, where he developed a reputation for excellence in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular and neurological disorders.

In July 2024, he joined Paramythia Medical Centre, where he continues to practise as a Neurologist and Neurophysiologist, providing specialised care in his field.

 

He actively participates in three to four international neurology conferences per year, staying updated on the latest advancements in neurology and neurophysiology.

Publications & Research

Dr Pouyiouros has contributed to medical research and has published several papers, including:

  • A case report on minor phacomatosis (Weber-Klippel-Trenauny syndrome) – presented at the Italian-Greek-Yugoslav Congress of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
  • Mitochondrial myopathy and an unusual type of MELAS in a highly intelligent patient: An ultrastructural study – published in Encephalos, 1991
  • Emotional disturbances appearing six months after a cerebral stroke or contusion – published in Encephalos, 1992
  • Cells of Cajal-Retzius: A morphological study using the Golgi method
  • Juvenile-type Multiple Sclerosis: An epidemiological study – presented at ECTRIMS 1994 (European Conference for the Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis)

 

Memberships & Contributions

Dr Pouyiouros is an active member of the European Neurological Society, contributing to the advancement of neurology through research, clinical practice, and participation in professional networks.
