EDUCATION
Dr Andreas Therapontos was born in Nicosia in 1956. He completed his secondary education at the Pancyprian Gymnasium, graduating in 1974. Following his mandatory two-year military service with the National Guard, Dr Therapontos pursued his medical studies at the University of Athens, where he graduated in 1982 with a degree in Medicine, earning the grade of “Excellent.”
He further specialised in Rheumatology, training for six years at prominent hospitals in Athens. From 1983 to 1985, he trained at Penteli Hospital, and from 1986 to 1990, he continued his specialisation at KAT Hospital.
SPECIALIZATION
Dr Therapontos is an expert in diagnosing and treating a wide range of rheumatic conditions, including:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Osteoarthritis
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Vasculitis
- Osteoporosis
- Various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions
EXPERIENCE
Since 1990, Dr Therapontos has been practicing privately as a Rheumatologist in Nicosia. In 1996, in collaboration with his wife, Dr Panagiota Chatzigianni, an Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, they established an Osteoporosis Centre, offering specialised care to patients, thereby utilizing their combined medical expertise.
Dr Therapontos is a founding member of the Cyprus Rheumatology Society, established in 1994, where he also served as the first president. His leadership significantly contributed to the advancement of Rheumatology in Cyprus.
Additionally, he served as a visiting Rheumatologist in various private hospitals, including St. Raphael Private Hospital in Larnaca (2006-2021) and IASIS Hospital in Paphos (2007-2022). Since 2020, he has been working within the General Healthcare System (GHS).
