EDUCATION
Dr Alexis Papadopoulos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He studied Medicine at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in Greece from which he graduated in 2004.
SPECIALIZATION
Dr Papadopoulos started his specialization in Special Pathology at the General Hospital of Larnaca and then went on to the University of Nottingham where between 2008-2009 he completed a full-time master’s degree (MSc) on the Management of Critically Ill patients. Upon completion of this degree, he returned to Greece where he started his formal training on Respiratory Medicine. He stayed in Greece for nearly 3 years, and then completed his registrar training at the Nicosia General Hospital in Cyprus, while developing a special interest in Interstitial Lung Diseases and interventional pulmonology and particularly, in bronchoscopies. In 2016, after successfully completing examinations, he obtained the European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine. In 2017 he completed a Clinical Fellowship in Interstitial Lung Disease at the Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust.
EXPERIENCE
During his training, he had the chance to work at the Rehabilitation Centre of Hadassah Hospital in Israel and following this, he worked as a pre-registration house officer and Internal Medicine registrar in Cyprus.
He has a particular interest in European Respiratory Society’s (ERS) activities, attending several ERS schools and successfully gaining the European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine in 2016 (EDRM). In 2017, he moved back to the UK to work in one of the most prestigious Respiratory Centres, the Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust, where he completed a Clinical Fellowship in Interstitial Lung Disease. Upon completion of this fellowship, he was appointed as a Respiratory Consultant with a special Interest in Interstitial Lung Disease at the University of South Manchester Hospitals NHS Trust (Wythenshawe Hospital) until 2019.
During his medical career, Dr Papadopoulos has participated in various seminars and workshops, received two abstract awards during European Respiratory Society’s annual congresses, performed various presentations on respiratory topics in several hospitals and institutions and participated in numerous audits and quality improvement projects. He has published several articles in local and European medical journals, and he is also a member of different medical societies, namely European Respiratory Society (ERS), British Thoracic Society (BTS), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous diseases (WASOG). In 2019, he earned a European Diploma in Lung Ultrasound (level 1 & 2).
