EDUCATION

Dr Maria Loizou was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. She completed her secondary education at Kykkos B’ Lyceum before pursuing her medical studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany.

As part of her medical training, she completed her mandatory practical year at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Dr Horst Schmidt Klinikum Wiesbaden, subsequently obtaining her medical degree in 2020.

Following the completion of her medical studies, Dr Loizou undertook a five-year specialist training programme in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT – Ear, Nose and Throat) at Klinikum Bremen-Mitte, a maximum-care hospital in Bremen, Germany.

During her specialist training, she gained extensive clinical and surgical experience in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of ENT conditions, including chronic and complex disorders. Her training encompassed the individualised assessment and treatment of patients with acute and chronic ENT conditions, as well as the performance of both routine and complex ENT surgical procedures.

In 2025, Dr Loizou successfully completed her specialist training in Otorhinolaryngology, graduating with excellence. She subsequently returned to Nicosia, Cyprus, where she currently practises as a Specialist Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT Physician) in private practice.

SPECIALIZATION

Dr Loizou specialises in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of ear, nose, throat and head and neck conditions, from common ENT problems to more complex and specialised disorders.

Her areas of clinical expertise include:

• Ear conditions: ear infections, chronic ear disease, hearing loss, tinnitus, earwax-related problems, disorders of the tympanic membrane, dizziness and vertigo.
• Nose and sinus conditions: allergic rhinitis, nasal obstruction, deviated nasal septum, turbinate enlargement, acute and chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, recurrent sinus infections and nosebleeds.
• Throat and voice conditions: recurrent tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, sore throat, swallowing difficulties, hoarseness, voice disorders, laryngitis and reflux-related throat and laryngeal conditions.
• Paediatric ENT: recurrent ear infections, glue ear, hearing problems, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, nasal obstruction and recurrent throat infections.
• Head and neck conditions: neck lumps and lymph node disorders, salivary gland conditions, and benign and malignant lesions of the head and neck.
• Smell and taste disorders: reduced or altered sense of smell or taste and other olfactory and gustatory disorders.
• Balance disorders: dizziness, vertigo and other disorders affecting balance.
• Other complex ENT conditions.

Dr Loizou combines medical and surgical expertise in the management of ENT conditions, adopting an individualised approach to diagnosis and treatment based on each patient’s symptoms, clinical findings and specific needs.

EXPERIENCE

Throughout her specialist training and continuing professional development between 2021 and 2025, Dr Loizou completed a range of specialised courses, advanced training programmes and professional conferences in Germany. These programmes contributed to the continued development of her clinical and surgical expertise in Otorhinolaryngology and related fields.

Her postgraduate professional development has included specialised training in ear and petrous bone surgery, paranasal sinus and skull base surgery, head and neck ultrasonography, allergology, and disorders of taste and smell, as well as additional training in dizziness and balance disorders.

Following the completion of her specialist training in Germany in 2025, Dr Loizou returned to Cyprus and currently practises as a Specialist Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT Physician) in Nicosia.
